Why TikTok sales are hard to track

A lot of TikTok discovery happens without a click. Someone sees a product in their feed, keeps scrolling, and later searches for the brand on Google or types in the URL.

When that happens, the sale usually gets credited to search or direct traffic. TikTok's role in the purchase doesn't show up in click-based reporting.

TikTok Ads Manager also only sees TikTok data. It shows how your TikTok ads performed, but it can’t tell you how those ads worked with your other marketing, like Meta, Google, or email. TikTok could be taking full credit for a sale when it should only get partial credit.

Why TikTok Ads Manager reports more sales than your store

For web campaigns using the TikTok Pixel or Events API, TikTok defaults to a 7-day click-through window and a 1-day view-through window. View-through means TikTok credits itself for a purchase when someone saw an ad, didn't click, and bought within the window.

Meta and Google apply their own attribution rules too. When a customer interacts with ads on several platforms, each one can claim the same order, so the combined total across ad platforms often exceeds the sales Shopify (or another e-commerce platform) shows.

How ThoughtMetric tracks TikTok sales

ThoughtMetric tracks every order in your store and connects it to the marketing efforts that led to it.

Most purchases involve more than one touchpoint. A customer might click a TikTok ad, come back through a Google search a few days later, and buy from an email.

Instead of each platform claiming the full order, ThoughtMetric splits credit across those touchpoints using the default multi-touch attribution model. Each order is counted once, so TikTok's attributed revenue reflects its share of real sales.

Post-purchase surveys capture non-click discovery
ThoughtMetric offers a post-purchase survey feature that asks customers how they heard about the brand. It's part of every ThoughtMetric subscription, so brands don't need a separate survey tool.

For TikTok, the post-purchase survey is especially important because so much discovery happens in the feed without a click. A customer might watch a TikTok video, search for the brand on Google a few days later, and buy. Pixel tracking only sees the Google search.

When that customer answers TikTok in the survey, the Multi-Touch model gives credit to both TikTok and organic search.

Lookback windows from 7 to 90 days
ThoughtMetric lets brands set a lookback window of 7, 14, 30, 60, or 90 days. A longer window captures customers who discover a product on TikTok and take weeks or months to buy.

The full customer journey for every order
Each order in ThoughtMetric shows the campaigns that contributed to it. A breakdown shows how credit was distributed, along with a timeline of every touchpoint.

Track TikTok and the rest of your marketing in one place

Running TikTok alongside other channels often involves logging into several ad platforms and trying to piece together a performance report. ThoughtMetric gives brands one place to check how all marketing efforts are performing.

Getting started doesn't take much work. Brands install the tracking pixel, connect their ad accounts, and turn on the post-purchase survey, and every customer gets a free onboarding call with the ThoughtMetric team. After that, human support is there whenever questions come up (no AI chatbot).

FAQs

Why does TikTok Ads Manager show more sales than my store?
TikTok credits itself for purchases up to 7 days after a click and 1 day after a view by default. Meta, Google, and other platforms apply their own rules to the same orders, so the combined total across ad platforms is often higher than your total sales.

How do you track TikTok sales when customers don't click?
Post-purchase surveys ask customers how they heard about the brand after checkout. ThoughtMetric includes a built-in survey, and its Multi-Touch model factors those responses into attribution so TikTok gets credit for discovery that never led to a click.

Can I see which TikTok ads bring in new customers?
Yes, ThoughtMetric shows new vs. returning customer data at the ad level, so brands can see which TikTok ads reach new buyers.
